DIY: Create Your Own Podcasts

By Larry Magid

You can easily broadcast your own audio shows for the online world to listen to.

Podcasting is one of the hottest trends on the Internet. A melding of "iPod" and "broadcast," it’s a way to create audio programs that can be listened to on an iPod, another portable music player, or a PC. Thousands of people and organizations are producing podcasts to share everything from their favorite music to their political views to stream-of-consciousness rants.

Podcasting got a major shot in the arm in June when Apple released version 4.9 of its iTunes software, which directly supports podcasts. It lets you quickly locate thousands of programs, listen to them, or copy them to an iPod for later listening. (You can also move podcasts you’ve downloaded with iTunes to other music players, so long as the podcasts are in MP3 format, as most are.) A free program, Doppler (www.dopplerradio.net), lets you transfer podcasts to Windows Media Player.
