The good: The Archos 604 WiFi gives you access to the Web and e-mail; touch-screen experience is good; vibrant widescreen display; can record audio and video with the optional kit; has a removable battery, a built-in speaker, and a built-in kickstand; sophisticated interface; can view photos and listen to music simultaneously; compatible with subscription services; it’s durable and compact for its screen size; excellent photo viewer; can be used as a wireless file server.

The bad: The Archos 604 WiFi is limited to 30GB; must purchase separate kit to record audio/video; must purchase separate kit to get a power adapter; must purchase plug-ins for certain types of video files; weak bundled accessories; proprietary USB cable; not easy to operate blindly; processor is sluggish; nowhere to store stylus without case; cannot listen to music and surf Web simultaneously; battery takes a major hit when using Wi-Fi.

The bottom line: The do-everything Archos 604 WiFi is completely stacked with awesome video playback, Web surfing, and other useful features, but the sluggish processor keeps the experience from being totally satisfying.

Engadget has also posted a review about Archos 604. They has this to say about Archos 604 30GB over at their blog.

"Archos apparently made a purposeful omission and left the DVR gear as an optional accessory, just in case some folks didn’t want to pony up the extra $100 for the at-home convenience. It was noted that the unit performed well when paired up with the Archos DVR Station, and the staff was more than satisfied with the 14+ hours of audio / 4 hours of video use reportedly on tap via the removable battery. If you haven’t caught the drift at this point, here’s the skinny: the Archos 604 is a worthy update to the respectable AV500, and if you’re looking to snap up a PMP (and maybe add recording capabilities down the road), it’s not a bad way at all to spend $350."

PCMag gave Archos 604 a very good rating, 4 out of 5.

According to them the Archos 604 is a very good portable media player, but it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor’s high standard of sound quality. Also, many of the features that were standard on the AV500 are now optional extras, particularly the ability to record video from analog sources.

They write ‘Since I have been going to the gym recently, I wanted something small I could fit in my pocket. I was looking at Apple iPod Nanos but they are far more expensive and far easier to bend and crack. I did not want a player that I would feel guilty about breaking or caring for. When I was looking at the Sandisk Sansa, I noticed it was the perfect size and the package even came with an elastic armband and case! So if I wanted to run on the treadmill or out on the road, I could strap this to my arm, hit the hold switch and forget about it.’

No longer is the iPod for just listening to audio, viewing photos or watching videos. Now it can be used as a dictionary as well. That’s right – Merriam-Webster today introduced a version of their dictionary for Apple’s extremely popular digital audio player.

The Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Dictionary, which was developed in conjunction with iPod-formatted reading material publisher iPREPpress, is being called the first all text brand-named dictionary for the iPod. This dictionary, which generally costs $14.95, includes 40,000 words and their definitions, a pronunciation guide, abbreviation guide and a “Handbook of Style”.

After purchasing and downloading the dictionary from the iPREPpress Web site, users load into onto their iPod and can search for words through a hierarchical menu and hyperlinked structure. One can listen to their favorite tunes in the background while viewing dictionary entries on- screen.

Other Merriam-Webster iPod formatted titles will also soon be appearing on the iPREPpress site. These include Merriam- Webster’s Pocket Thesaurus, Merriam-Webster’s Rhyming Dictionary for song and hip-hop writers, Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Atlas, and The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Quotations.

The bad: No extras included, such as a dock, A/V cables, or a power adapter; poor battery life for video; slight delay when playing video; no guarantee that your non-iTunes Music Store video will play on an iPod, even after using converted third-party software.

The bottom line: Get the affordable, sleek, and sexy 5G Apple iPod for its audio virtues. Although video looks great, poor video battery life and a relatively small screen hamper its appeal to video heads.

Windows A to Z! has also posted a review for the Apple iPod 5G (Video 30GB, white). They concludes - ‘In review, the Apple iPod Video is another excellent addition to the Apple iPod family. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to upgrade from their non-color 4th gen or earlier iPod, you’ll really be pleased with the difference. If you’re primarily looking for a portable video player, however, you’ll want to buy a dedicated portable video player because of the poor video battery life and other limitations. If you’re primarily looking for an audio player and the occasional video playback, then the Apple iPod 5th gen is without a doubt for you.

Designtechnica has got this to say about Apple iPod 5G ( Video, 30GB) - ‘Regardless of the players shortcomings, content is the name of the game, and Apple is covering their tracks. A closed system between the iPod product line and iTunes Music Store helps keep the whole experience simple to the end-user, and now with the addition of video downloads in the iTunes Music Store library, there is even more reason to switch to the Apple brand. There may be better video players on the market, but if there is not a lot of easy to purchase content, it defeats the purpose for the average user. Consider Apple’s latest product as an iPod that just happens to play video rather than a true “iPod Video”. For basically the same price as the previous model, you are getting a slimmer player with longer battery life and video capabilities; and if you ask us that’s a pretty sweet deal.’

Kickstartnews.com has also reviewed Apple iPod (30GB, video, 5G) - ‘For several years I have been using a Pocket PC on which I’ve played music, read books, watched movies and TV shows, all this alongside the other tasks that these great little computers allow me to carry out. Okay, it’s not an iPod and does not permit me to carry my whole music library (or at least a huge chunk of it) with me. But with a decent sized SD card in the Pocket PC I can do a lot. In any case, for all my griping I actually like the iPod because of its clean design and easy usage and I will most likely continue to use my new toy alongside my PDA, when, that is, I can carry both. Wait a moment—there’s an idea! Create an iPod-based PDA! Do I hear a phantom uttering the word ‘Newton’?’

Lordpercy.com has reviewed the Apple iPod (30GB, video, 5G) - ‘Choosing an iPod is still the safe bet, no one will ever be upset with one as a gift and it will provide excellent audio quality as well as being simple to drive, the video could be dismissed as a gimmick but we’d have money on it being improved over time much as the battery life for audio playback has been increased.’

The SanDisk Sansa c100 series includes a 1GB (c140) and 2GB (c150) version of this flash based MP3 player. The player includes your basic set of features, including a 1.21 inch screen for viewing photos and navigation through WMA and MP3 audio files. The player will also support WMA DRMed tracks, including subscription services such as Yahoo! Unlimited and Napster To Go. The Sansa c100 also packs in an FM tuner and voice recording.

CNET has reviewed the SanDisk Sansa c150 (2GB) and they write

Upside: Although aimed at the budget crowd, the SanDisk Sansa c100 offers an updated color screen, along with WMA subscription compatibility. The device is a cinch to navigate, thanks in part to the dedicated menu and volume buttons, a tactile five-way control, and an easy-to-read, icon-based menu system. The c100 plays MP3, WMA, and Audible content; has a built-in FM radio/recorder (with autoscan and 20 presets); a voice recorder; and the ability to display small photos and album art.

Downside: The SanDisk Sansa c100 utilizes a proprietary USB cable for transfers. While we do like replaceable battery options (the c100 uses a single AAA), we also enjoy the fact that the battery lasts more than 20 hours; the c100 has a rated life of 15 hours. As expected, photos don’t look great, and they must be converted for getting them on to the device, though having a photo option is better than not.

Outlook: The SanDisk Sansa c100 series is a nice addition to the SanDisk line. It has all the features that most people need from a flash player, along with decent sound quality, an intuitive control system, and very competitive prices, which will no doubt be lower online.

They write ‘The Sansa SanDisk c100 series is not the most solid feeling MP3 player nor does it have the best color screen. Overall the player feels like a toy. The c100 may not appease hardcore portable MP3 player fans. The Sansa c100 however, should not be dismissed- it is a great entry level MP3 player with a great feature set for the price. In addition to all the features most people would need, the player comes with a nice set of included accessories. The sound quality is better then most flash based MP3 players, helped by the c100’s custom EQ.’

While Apple went out for minimal features in order to keep its iPods looking zen (no offence, Creative), Samsung, like most Korean companies, prefers to play it by the numbers (of features). Though it’s a force to be reckoned with in the MP3 player market with its status as the largest flash memory manufacturer, as well as a stated resolve to unseat the iPod from top dog position, Samsung still has some way to go before it can emulate the universal appeal of the iPod.

T3 has also reviewed Samsung YH-J70 and find the p layer dissapointing as they write ‘Alas, although this has features coming out of its chunky little ears (MP3 encoding, FM tuner, slideshow function, cuddly toy…), it’s got a menu system so archaic, the original blueprints for it may be on King Tut’s tomb wall. Getting tracks onto it is painful too, because of Samsung’s primitive software, whilst all videos have to be converted to a proprietary format or be denied entry. Oh, and then they look smudgy anyway.’

Good Gear Guide has been a little kind in their review and give the Samsung YH J70 and an above average rating of 3.5 out of 4. They like the features ‘18 EQ presets, line-in recording, FM tuner, FM recording, high quality earphones, video playback, USB Host mode, photo viewing capability’ but dislike the pricey tag. Overall they conclude ‘An MP3 player with advanced recording features,a small footprint and photo viewing, although this does come at a price.’

The good: Music player built into sunglasses for cordless listening; plays MP3, AAC, WMA, WMA DRM, and WAV tracks; up to 1GB of storage; multihinged earbuds allow for a perfect fit with most users; USB 2.0 connection.

The bad: Doesn’t come with wall charger or hard case; poor battery life; advanced playback controls are hard to remember; high price; music can be easily heard by those around you.

The bottom line: The Oakley Thump 2 is a great choice for athletes who want portable tunes minus the headphone cord.

Bona Fide Reviews has also posted a review for Oakley Thump 2 256MB . They write ‘The Oakley THUMP sunglasses are one hot item. The MP3 player functionality built into sporty sexy Oakley sunglasses really makes for a great experience. The glasses are comfortable, the ear buds sound great, and the player is generally extremely simple to use. For sports enthusiasts, tech gadget fanatics, or anyone looking to have the first of its kind electronic device the THUMP is definitely the way to go. Of course the $499 price tag for the 256MB model isn’t going to make this a mainstream item and until that price drops down a couple hundred dollars the THUMP will be for a select audience only. Of course, if Lil’ John likes them then they are definitely worth a second consideration. YEAH! ‘

PC Magazine gives Oakley Thumb 2 a rating of 3.5 out of 6. They write ‘Our main gripes are that the lenses don’t flip up like those on the original sunglasses (so we had to take these off in dim light), the earbuds don’t seem to have anywhere to go when they’re not in use (they fold up, but there’s no receptacle in the arms to make the earbuds less conspicuous), and there’s no repeat function. But we’re pretty sure the Oakley name is the primary reason for buying the Thump 2, not the feature set or sound quality—unless you’re just into having the most expensive, least full-featured player on the market. Frankly, the only way we’d buy these is if they had some kind of heads-up display on the lenses. The Thump 2 is available in 256MB ($299), 512MB ($349), and 1GB ($449) capacities, reflecting the dropping prices of flash memory since the original Thump came out at $495 for 512MB.’

The Tech Lounge has reviewed the Oakely Thump 2 MP3 Sunglasses. They conclude ‘Oakley has topped themselves with the release of the Thump 2. The Thump 2 is a great MP3 player sunglasses system. The MP3 player also doubles as a flash media device that is recognized by Windows XP, 2000 and ME without the use of an external driver and connects via a USB 2.0 cable. Now that there are two styles of Thump (original and the Thump 2) you have to ask yourself which is right for you. Both the Thump and Thump 2 cost the same amount of money, which is based on storage capacity. Both Thumps will work for you trend setting style gurus, or for you athletic junkies who want a cord-free MP3 player for biking and running. However, you will have to decide if you are old-school Oakley or more Terminator minded.’

Playlist gives a fair review for the strengths and weaknesses of the Oakley Thump 2. The lowdown ‘

If you’re looking for the latest gadget with lots of features and technical capabilities, you’d do better looking at a hard-drive based music player—with no interface, no playlist support, and no iTunes integration, the Thump 2 is bare-bones. But in terms of highly portable players for active people, the Thump 2 is hard to top.’
